Effects Of Albuterol On Children?
My kids (2 & 4) both have respiratory infections (and I do too). I have been giving them albuterol with a nebulizer 4-5 times a day per doctors instructions for 6 days now. It is better, but they are still coughing at lot in the morning and at night. They finished a course of antibiotics last week. They are acting fine (except very hyper), eating fine, no fever, no rashes, etc. I’m thinking about calling the doctor again (this would be our 3rd visit for this illness). When we first went in my 2 yr. old had walking pneumonia and my 4 year old had a throat and ear infection and they both had pink eye. The second time we went in they said they were all better but to continue the albuterol until the coughing stopped. Am I being paranoid?

The albuterol can be causing the cough. it is a side effect of the medicine. Albuterol will not cure a cough unless it is caused by bronchospasm. albuterol is not a cough medicine nor does it cure infection, the antibiotics do that. Your children’s respiratory infections would have gotten better without the albuterol. Doctors missuse albuterol all the time. You are not paranoid, stop the neb treatments.
Coughs can be very stubborn. It is not unusual for a cough to hang around for a month or so. The albuterol will cause hyper activity, in some more then others. I would consult their doctor and see if you can cut back on the treatments. The treatments are only beneficial if there is wheezing or a constricted air way, such as from asthma or bronchitis etc .
Totally agree with Frustrated RT. (^_^)
